Benefits of Massage for Summer Skin

July 7 2016

It’s summer, and you’ve been out enjoying the great outdoors. It’s also time for your regularly scheduled massage appointment. You’ve been playing hard, and your muscles would be happy for a rub down, but your skin may not be up for it. How do you know whether to keep your appointment or reschedule it?

As a good rule of thumb, never get a massage when you have a sunburn. If the burn is highly localized – maybe you forgot to put enough sunscreen on your cleavage, for example – you’re probably good to go. Your massage therapist will be able to avoid the burned area and still give you a great massage. But if it’s a large area, your massage therapist will be hard pressed to avoid it, and you’re probably better off rescheduling for a time after your skin has cooled down.

The same holds true for bug bites. If you just have a couple here and there, it’s not a big deal. If you’ve been eaten alive while camping in the woods, your skin won’t be happy about the added attention a massage will give it. Also, given this summer’s particular concerns about mosquitoes, you’ll be best served by using a reliable repellent when you know you’ll be spending time outdoors.

Even if you know you’ve been kind to your skin, a massage can help you be even more supportive of your skin’s health. Not only will you get the benefits of relaxation and drainage, your massage therapist can alert you to areas of potential concern on your skin that you may have overlooked. This is especially true if you’ve developed a long-term relationship with him or her.
