Let Your Nails Say It’s Spring

Even though the calendar says that it’s still a few weeks away, we’re getting a head start on spring with a look at the nail color trends coming your way. In the midst of a long, cold winter a bit of looking ahead to longer days and warmer weather can only be a good thing. Besides, if it’s springtime in your head, that’s all that really matters.

Pink is a springtime staple, but this year it will be softer than ever for nails. Get a cloudy look by using two coats of a neutral pink, like what you’d traditionally use for a French manicure, on shorter nails for a feminine, understated look. Or, add a soft golden topcoat over a baby pink for a burnished look. To capitalize on the trending monochromatic look, coordinate your pink polish with lips, cheeks and even your eyelids.

The new neutral this spring is a bit of departure – gray scale. It can be soft and pastel if you choose a polish with a lavender cast to it, or go for a wash of pale gray over a nude base coat. You can even make it an ombre by adding the pale gray just from mid-nail to tips. For a more bold neutral statement, use a charcoal base with a glittery silver top coat, or a nude base with a single stroke of steely gray straight down the middle of your nail from cuticle to tip.

There are lots of options if you’re hoping to branch out, too. Glittery metallics are showing up in reverse French manicures or as an outline over a pale basecoat flowing along the entire skin line. And architectural blocks of color are popping up on natural base coats with Bauhaus shapes in primary colors that are both metro and retro at the same time.
