Everyone likes to present a well-groomed appearance, and this includes our hands and nails. Professional manicures play an important role in keeping your hands looking their best. As with anything that you shell out your hard-earned cash for, you want to make sure you get the most for your money. There may also be times when life gets in the way and you just can’t make it to the salon as soon as you’d like. There are some things you can do between visits to ensure your manicure lasts as long as possible.

Keep Hands and Nails Hydrated
You already know that you need to moisturize your hands regularly to keep them looking good. But did you know that nails and cuticles need hydration too? Dry nails become brittle and are at risk of splitting and cracking. Ask your nail technician to recommend a good quality cuticle oil and apply it daily at bedtime, just before applying your nightly hand cream. This will keep your nails hydrated and less prone to breakage.

Wash Your Hands Rather Than Sanitize
The active ingredient in hand sanitizer is alcohol, which is very drying to skin and nails. Whenever possible opt to wash with moisturizing hand soap and water instead to prevent this drying effect that can wreck your manicure.

Treat Your Nails With Care
The role of your nails is to protect your fingers, not tightening screws, opening cans, and scraping off stickers. So, be sure to use the proper tool for the job and spare your nails. You need to treat them with care if you want your manicure to last. You should also be sure to always wear gloves to protect your nails when cleaning, washing dishes, or gardening.

When You Can’t Make It to the Salon
If you just can’t make it to the salon and your nails are looking ragged, there are a few things you can do. If you know ahead of time that it will be a while before your next visit, ask your nail technician to recommend a topcoat you can use to help protect your nails. For nails in desperate need of filling, don’t try to fill them yourself. Instead, apply a bit of glitter to the base with a top coat to conceal the area with an ombre effect. If your tips are rough and chipping, gently file them back and give them a top coat to seal and refresh them.
