One of the best ways to tame your hair this summer – one that doesn’t force it into submission by loading it up with chemicals and heat treatments – is to opt for a keratin treatment. But you probably already know that. Keratin treatments work by replenishing a natural component of your hair to help repair damage from styling techniques, or address your hair’s natural tendency to misbehave in the hot, humid summer weather. Keratin really is the best way to naturally restore your hair’s health, shine and manageability.
So this isn’t news – keratin is fantastic, and everyone knows it is. But with a little TLC, you can keep your keratin treatment working hard for you for longer this summer. There are typically two parts to summer fun: sun and water. And those are the two areas of focus for your keratin treatment’s longevity, too.
Protecting your hair from UV rays, whether or not you’ve had a keratin treatment, is an important part of summer hair care. The simplest way is to cover your hair when you’ll be out in the sun for any extended period of time. You can also use a leave-in conditioner that contains a sunscreen. In fact, any hair product that contains sunscreen is probably a good option.
While salt and chlorine tend to be no-no’s when it comes to hair care, fresh water is actually your keratin treatment’s best friend this summer. It’s more difficult for UV rays to penetrate wet hair than it is for them to damage dry hair. Spritzing your hair with fresh water while you’ll be out in the sun is a good way to help protect it. That said, when it’s time to fix your hair while it’s wet, opt for a wide-toothed comb with a spritz of detangler. It will help minimize breakage and keep your hair looking better for longer.
