Waging War On Winter Skin

January 29 2017

As if the lack of sunlight and the penetrating cold weren’t enough, winter has another insult to add to your injuries – dehydration. Even though you’re not sweating in the heat, you’re losing moisture at an alarming rate at this time of year. It’s because cold air can’t hold as much moisture as warm air does, but it still wants every little drop that it can suck out of you. Unfortunately, most of that is going to come straight out of your skin.

At the risk of creating a scenario that will keep you awake at night, it’s important to understand just how this winter weather actually affects your skin. First of all, your skin is made up of layers that work together to keep all sorts of nasty things from infecting your insides. It also works to keep your body properly hydrated, and at this time of year, that means sacrificing its own moisture in the process.

When your skin becomes dehydrated, the surface cells shed more slowly. This means that your skin looks dull and lifeless, mostly because it is just that. And this layer also becomes thin and jagged due to the lack of water making it feel rough and uneven.

Your skin also includes sebaceous glands that produce an oil-like substance called sebum. Sebum coats your skin with a microscopic film to keep moisture in and irritants out. When your skin gets dehydrated, sebum production kicks into overdrive to try to compensate, but it’s never enough. Your dehydrated skin becomes rough, itchy and flaky, and it makes any fine lines or wrinkles you may have even more noticeable.
